Driving Instructor Training
Start Your New Career Today
If you’re looking for a new, rewarding, and flexible career, becoming a driving instructor could be the perfect choice. At exL Driving School, we provide complete training and support to help you become a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
Our comprehensive programme takes you from Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) to ADI qualification, with expert guidance throughout every stage of the process. Unlike many other training providers, our course is fully inclusive, covering all the training hours required to prepare you for the three ADI qualification tests.
We also provide the additional training needed if you choose to work on a trainee (“pink”) licence, giving you the opportunity to gain real teaching experience and earn while you train.
With over 20 years of experience, exL has successfully trained more than 100 new driving instructors, many of whom are now running successful careers in the industry. Our experienced trainers and supportive environment ensure you have the best possible chance of success.
Before starting your training, we invite all potential trainees to meet us in person. This allows you to ask questions, learn more about the career, and ensure the course is right for you.
Importantly, we don’t tie you into contracts or long-term commitments once you qualify. Your career path remains completely your choice.
Our Training Philosophy - Client-Centered Learning
At exL Driving School, we believe the most effective instructors are trained using client-centred learning techniques.
Rather than relying on traditional tell and instruct methods, our training focuses on coaching, problem solving, and self-reflection. This approach encourages trainee instructors to actively analyse driving situations, develop their own understanding, and build confidence in their teaching ability.
Training is tailored to your individual learning style, pace, and experience, ensuring you receive the support you need to progress successfully through the qualification process. By learning through this modern coaching approach, you will also gain the skills required to help your future pupils become safe, independent, and confident drivers.
The ADI Qualification Process
To become a fully qualified driving instructor in the UK, you must complete the three-part ADI qualification process, regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). All three tests must be passed within two years of passing Part 1.
Part 1 - Theory and Hazard Perception
This test assesses your knowledge of driving theory and instructional techniques.
Multiple-choice test
-
100 questions covering road procedures, traffic signs, driving techniques, instructional methods, and road safety
-
Pass mark: 85/100 with a minimum score in each section
-
Hazard perception test
-
14 video clips identifying developing hazards
-
Pass mark: 57/75
Both sections must be passed in the same sitting.
-
Part 2 - Driving Ability Test
This stage tests your personal driving standard, which must be higher than that of a learner driver.
The test lasts approximately one hour and includes:
-
An eyesight test
-
Driving in a variety of road and traffic conditions
-
Assessment of observation, mirror use, signalling, positioning, and anticipation
You may also be asked to perform manoeuvres such as:
-
Parallel parking
-
Reversing exercises
-
Bay parking
-
A controlled stop
To pass, you must demonstrate a consistently high standard of driving with no serious or dangerous faults.
-
Part 3 - Instructional Ability Test
The final stage evaluates your ability to teach learner drivers effectively.
During the test, the examiner will assess how well you:
-
Plan and structure lessons
-
Communicate instructions clearly
-
Identify and correct faults
-
Provide helpful feedback
-
Maintain safety throughout the lesson
This stage focuses heavily on coaching skills and client-centred learning techniques, ensuring instructors can support learners in developing safe driving habits.
